The Baltic Sea in its deep hides a tremendous wealth of history. The underwater cultural heritage has unique qualities, also in a global perspective, mostly due to many centuries of intensive seafaring and the relative absence of aggressive wood-eating organisms as Teredo Navalis. A working group was formed in 1999 by representatives from cultural heritage institutions in all the coast bound countries in the region. Its overall purpose is to form a body for co-operation and exchange of information and ideas, aiming at an increased awareness of the unique cultural heritage in the Baltic Sea and an improved protection of it.
